A new report out of the British Parliament asks for a better global surveillance system to identify diseases before they infect large numbers of people. They believe, as do we at Zombie Watch Network, that we are currently not equipped to handle another large scale pandemic.
Listed among the new strains was SARS and H5N1. SARS hasn’t seen a significant outbreak since October 2004 in a laboratory in China. The largest outbreak of SARS was in 2003, which claimed 774 lives worldwide (data provided by the CDC). H5N1, an avian influenza, has a 60% mortality rate among humans (CDC). However, a significant outbreak has not occurred because infection requires “direct contact with sick or dead poultry or wild birds, or visiting a live poultry market.”
Sky News reports that the British committee believes that another pandemic outbreak was “inevitable”. We agree. Zombie Watch Network is working to bring you information on outbreaks as they happen. Unfortunately, we can only report on diseases that have already spread enough to receive media attention. It is up to the World Health Organization (WHO) to step up and increase their surveillance to protect us against the next inevitable outbreak.
