A “new” book will be hitting bookshelves this May and Hollywood is fighting over the rights. Seth Grahame-Smith’s Pride and Prejudice and Zombies is an “updated version of the Jane Austen classic. The book is said to feature the “original text of Jane Austen’s beloved novel with all-new scenes of bone crunching zombie action”. Rumor has it that Hollywood studios are in a bidding war for who will get to turn this classic into a blockbuster movie.
“Desperate for new ideas, studio chiefs hope ‘P&P&Z’ will mark the bloody birth of a feral offspring of classic British literature: ‘monster-lit’. It quickly became obvious that Jane [Austen] had laid down the blueprint for a zombie novel,” said Grahame-Smith, a television comedy writer. “Why else in the original should a regiment arrive on Lizzie Bennett’s doorstep when they should have been off fighting Napoleon? It was to protect the family from an invasion of brain-eaters, obviously.”
So who will get the rights and who will play the lead role of Elizabeth Bennett? We recently saw Keira Knightly in the role and even saw an Indian Bollywood version hit the screens. Either way, the book AND the film will be something to watch for. I’ve never read Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice but I will definitely be checking out THIS version!
From the publisher:
Pride and Prejudice and Zombies features the original text of Jane Austen’s beloved novel with all-new scenes of bone-crunching zombie action. As our story opens, a mysterious plague has fallen upon the quiet English village of Meryton-and the dead are returning to life! Feisty heroine Elizabeth Bennett is determined to wipe out the zombie menace, but she’s soon distracted by the arrival of the haughty and arrogant Mr. Darcy. What ensues is a delightful comedy of manners with plenty of civilized sparring between the two young lovers-and even more violent sparring on the blood-soaked battlefield as Elizabeth wages war against hordes of flesh-eating undead. Complete with 20 illustrations in the style of C. E. Brock (the original illustrator of Pride and Prejudice), this insanely funny expanded edition will introduce Jane Austen’s classic novel to new legions of fans.

This is great. I had to check about 20 other sites to make sure this wasn’t made up…..but it’s not, its real! They’re actually doing this. It’s gonna piss off so may people. My wife’s favorite author is Jane Austen and she called this an abomination! She’s right, it is, but it’s also great! Count me in! : )
Sorry, I don’t buy it. Nobody is this stupid… no wait, scratch that… (sigh) … if they can make a movie like “The Spirit”, then they can do this. Shelly is probably right, this is an abomination. I mean, come on! Trying to squash together the ultimate chick flick with its antithesis, a zombie flick? The two just don’t mix! What’s next, a Care Bears special with special guest star The Punisher?
i’m not at all interested in a movie, but i will buy the book. ty Seth, as this is the only way i would read a book like Pride and Prejudice. oh, and by the way, i would definitely watch a Care Bears get blasted by the Punisher special.
