Thinking about sailing to safe places, and realizing I have no seaman skills at all, made me look up these links.
On this page, look for the list of topics about halfway down the page on the left hand side.  Those are what I found helpful.

This one, seriously, you could probably pose an evac question and get a decent answer about size of boat, where to get instructions on sailing, ect...

If you're planning a big voyage, like US to New Zealand, I think we'd need a tall ship.  Here's some info.  Definately need a crew, and a boat!  The knot tying page is a link from the first, just put it seperately because it's useful and you might get bogged down looking through all the tallship info.

(there is the sailing for dummies book on that page as well)

I'd recommened a catamaran then.  Way more stable on the water.  Plus good storage on the outer 2 wings.  Plus better speed on the water.  Your biggest threats would be predicting storms and finding safe places up rivers to hide.  Your boat could be a target for other surviors wanting a peice of your safty while in shallow waters.  Plus I'm sure water pirate would be a huge threat.  I'd avoid all boats adrift in fear that the crew has been ransacked.

I like the idea but I can't help but think that anywhere you go is as bad as the place you left from.

You remind me of a Dwarf or a Hobbit or something. They don't seem to like water either. Or wait a minute, don't Vampires have a problem crossing water too? Hmm.... ?   Shocked

Hobbits arent to be taken lightly. Remember, they saved Middle Earth! And Bilbo killed the Dragon Smaug. Yes, I read all those books too-front to back.
